Air handlers usually connect to ductwork, but also operate without ductwork.
Small air handlers are called terminal units, and may only include an air filter, coil, and blower. These small units are called blower coils or fan coil units. An air handler designed for outdoor use, usually on roofs, is called a packaged unit (PU), heating and air conditioning unit (HCU), or rooftop unit (RU).
